(Tortoise and Hare race, Marathi moral story)

(Introduction)

Kasav Ani Sasa (The Tortoise and the Hare) is a classic race between a speedy, show-off hare and a slow but steady tortoise. It teaches children that talent alone is not enough: effort, focus and humility matter more.

The Tortoise and the Hare (English)

In a green forest lived a snow-white hare. He was so fast that he could vanish in the blink of an eye, and he was very proud of it. “Nobody in this forest is as quick as me!” he told every animal he met.

By the lake lived a calm, gentle tortoise. It walked slowly, but it never left a job half done.

One morning the hare teased the tortoise in front of everyone. “You’re so slow, it must be evening by the time you walk home from the lake!” The other animals laughed. The tortoise felt hurt, but replied calmly, “Brother Hare, let’s have a race. Then we’ll see who gets there first.” The hare laughed so hard he had to hold his tummy.

The race was set: from the lake to the old banyan tree on top of the hill. Wise Mr. Fox was the judge. He swished his tail and called, “One, two, three… go!”

The hare shot off like the wind and was out of sight in seconds. The tortoise set off at its usual pace, one step at a time. Halfway up, the hare looked back. No tortoise anywhere! “It’ll take that slowcoach till afternoon to get here,” he thought. There was fresh grass and cool shade under a mango tree, so he ate his fill and lay down for a short nap. Soon he was fast asleep.

The tortoise didn’t stop. The sun grew hot and its legs began to ache, but it kept walking. It quietly passed the snoring hare and slowly climbed the hill.

When the hare woke up, the sun was setting. He leapt up and ran as fast as he could. But at the top, the tortoise was already standing by the banyan tree, and all the animals were clapping!

The hare hung his head. “I’m sorry, friend. I shouldn’t have made fun of you.” The tortoise smiled. “That’s alright. Next time, let’s not race. Let’s go for a walk together!”

Moral: Slow and steady wins the race. Never be proud of your gifts, and never look down on others.

(Questions to Ask Kids)

(Why did the hare make fun of the tortoise?)
(Where did the race start and end?)
(Why did the hare lose?)
(Why did the tortoise win?)
(Would you rather be like the hare or the tortoise? Why?)

(Activities)

I grew up in Mumbai listening to my grandmother’s stories, repeating the proverbs my mother taught me, and getting lost in the bustle of festivals at home. Back then, I never realised how special it all was. Then my daughter was born, and one day a thought stayed with me: how will all of this reach her? Aapla Marathi Manoos began with that question. I don’t want Marathi culture to stay only with us; I want it to belong to everyone. So I write in Marathi, in Romanized Marathi, and in English, so that no one is left out. Everything here is something I’ve lived, heard, or learned from my elders.
