(Introduction)
Tahanlela Kavla (The Thirsty Crow) is one of the best-known moral stories for children. A crow finds water at the bottom of a pot, too low to reach, and solves the problem with patience and a clever idea. The best part: real crows and their cousins can actually do this!

The Thirsty Crow (English)
It was the peak of summer. Not a single cloud floated in the sky, and the sun blazed down on the village. The well had run low and the stream had dried up.
A black crow flew here and there in the heat, searching for water. His throat was parched and his wings were tired. “Caw caw, where will I find water?” he muttered to himself.
Then he spotted a clay pot in the courtyard of a house. He swooped down, perched on its rim and peeped inside. There was water, but only a little, right at the bottom! He stretched his neck and beak as far as he could, but he couldn’t reach it. He tried to tip the pot over, but it was far too heavy.
For a moment the crow felt like giving up. Then he told himself, “Giving up won’t bring me water. Let me think.” He looked around calmly and noticed a heap of small pebbles in a corner of the courtyard. An idea flashed in his mind: “If I drop pebbles into the pot, the water will rise!”
He picked up one pebble in his beak and dropped it in. Plop! Then another, and another. With every pebble the water crept a little higher. He was tired, but he didn’t stop. After twenty or so pebbles, the water finally reached the top. The crow drank to his heart’s content and flew off happily, cawing all the way.
Moral: Don’t give up when things get hard. Think calmly, keep trying, and you will find a way. Where there’s a will, there’s a way!

(Questions to Ask Kids)
(Where did the crow find water?)
(Why couldn’t he drink it at first?)
(What was his clever idea?)
(Why did the water rise?)
(When did something feel hard, and what did you do?)
(Activities)
(More Moral Stories)

English
Namaskar, I’m Gayatri.
I grew up in Mumbai listening to my grandmother’s stories, repeating the proverbs my mother taught me, and getting lost in the bustle of festivals at home. Back then, I never realised how special it all was.
Then my daughter was born, and one day a thought stayed with me: how will all of this reach her?
Aapla Marathi Manoos began with that question. I don’t want Marathi culture to stay only with us; I want it to belong to everyone. So I write in Marathi, in Romanized Marathi, and in English, so that no one is left out.
Everything here is something I’ve lived, heard, or learned from my elders.
